about

Weavers of Light is music for the Winter Solstice: a celebration of Yule, the shortest day of the year, the darkest time—but in the midst of darkness, there begins the return of the Light. Winter solstice rituals appear in almost all of the world’s religions, as celebrations of the Light, often involving candles, lamps, bonfires. The texts for Weavers of Light are mostly original, modeled after the viewpoint and traditions of earth-centered neo-pagan Goddess-religions, such as modern Wicca.

Weavers of Light was commissioned for Perfect Harmony Men’s Chorus, Madison, WI, in 2009. It was premiered on December 5, 2009, with a second premiere on December 10, 2010. This recording was made at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, Monona, WI, December 19, 2010.

Ken Forney, Artistic Director
Ken Kusiak, Assistant Director & Accompanist

The composer thanks the artistic staff, members, and Board of Directors of Perfect Harmony for their enthusiastic support of his music.

Weavers of Light
Words and Music by Arthur Durkee
(except * original Goddess chant by Deena Metzger)

Stone, sea, wind, light,
Earth, water, air, fire,
Eternal Light, return

Isis, Asarte, Diana, Hecate,
Demeter, Kali, Innana *

We all come from the Goddess,
And to Her we shall return,
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean

Hoof & horn, hoof & horn,
All that dies must be reborn,
Vine & grain, vine & grain,
All that falls shall rise again

Ganapati Ganesha, Ganapati Ganesha

Winter stone, shrouded snow
Bear sleeping, silent heart
Blizzard frost, hearthstone warm
Ice apple, cider heart
Remember, remember
Summer rain, cooling porch
Bee shelter, thunder heart
Eternal Light, return

God is a verb, Lord of the Dance,
Horned God dancing, Light, return
Sustaining light, blown out like a candle,
We all fall away, Light, return
There is only the Now, past Dreamtime spun,
No history, no future, Light, return
Dip into waters, touching ripples,
Rivers of changing, Light, return

Eternal Light, return
Light, return
