about

Spiritcatcher is improvised music by Barbaric Yawps, a jazz/improvisation quartet whose emotionally intense music was often inspired by the music of other cultures, the avant-garde, and free jazz, plus some simply beautiful melodies. The Yawps were about raw intensity, honesty, the power of feeling; every gig was a full workout.

This is an in-studio capture of what we often did live, and in rehearsal. Many Barbaric Yawps tunes, primarily written by Tom Lachmund, were short melody sections that become jumping-off points for flights of improvisation, often verging on free jazz. Except for the title track, which is a structured improv, all the tracks on Spiritcatcher are spontaneous free improv.
