Suite for concert flute (solo player, multiple tracks)

Arthur Durkee: concert flute in C

Solar Wind is a suite of music featuring a single instrument: concert flute. Some movements feature "duets" created via multitracking in studio. The suite was conceived around the following scenario:

A CME solar flare is ejected from the surface of the Sun. Crossing interplanetary space, it becomes part of the solar wind, passes through a field of ships tacking against the solar wind with giant solar sails, is captured by the Earth's strong magnetic field, down whose field lines it rages into our atmosphere, exciting gaseous atoms to burst into radiant glowing splendor as the aurora.

I've never done an album quite like this before.

I am truly in new territory: I have never played or recorded this much solo concert flute before now. I worked hard to get my playing to a level adequate to perform my musical concept, with no certainty of success. It has been a sometimes scary process. I am explroing completely new techniques and styles on flute. So I can say that this album is genuinely some of the most experimental music I have yet released on Bandcamp. It’s completely experimental.

The music in style is gestural, featuring partially-composed, partially-improvised elements. It falls under the rubric of classical experimental, avant-garde music, which I have composed all my life. It is where I began as a composer, and is territory I still love to explore.
