for Jeff (EP)

A spontaneous homage to my friend Jeff Luebke, two new tracks for Stick, the instrument we both play. He has been a friend who helped me several times to keep going with my music. This EP is dedicated to him, in deep gratitude.

These two new tracks are semi-composed structured improvs, recorded direct to multitrack in studio. Each track was intentionally mixed and mastered in one day.

"for Jeff" is a mood piece, coming out of an emotional day.

"Persistence of Pulse" arises from a refusal to give in to all the challenges that would drag us down. We rise, we keep going, we persist.

Both pieces are composed of layered repeating ostinato cells, often of variable lengths. They both look back to my most recent solo Chapman Stick album, "Shifting Times," and continue to develop some of those ideas into the future. This EP is a both a look back and a taste of things to come. Stay tuned.

"midnights" is a lyrical elegy, the first piece I recorded using both my newly-acquired vintage digital synth, a Yamaha DX7, and Jef''s NS/Stick, which he wanted me to have after he passed. I am both honored and a bit overwhelmed with this generous act, and plan to dig in deep to make new recordings. "midnights" is a first exploratory piece. It also reflects the powerful emotions I feel around inheriting one of Jeff's musical instruments.
