Bamboo

for solo flute


“Bamboo” is a Zen-inspired short album of solo flute pieces (one or two with overdubs).

The album may be used for background music, meditation, or listening. The musical style is rooted in flutes made from bamboo, from East Asia and Southeast Asia. I used three different shakuhachi (Japan), and three different suling (Indonesia): suling Sunda and suling degung (both from West Java), and suling gambuh (Bali). Some of the music uses extended flute techniques.

Initially, I set out to do another EP composed, recorded, and released in one day, but circumstances, travel, and obligations derailed that plan; instead, I have finished the album in two locations, one week apart. The music is based on improvisations that became structured during mixing. I discovered years ago that each flute has its own unique music. All I have to do is pick one up and start playing, and very quickly a piece develops, given by the flute.
