Dangerous Odds
Live at Fyfe’s Corner Bistro, 29 August 1996

(The Best of Dangerous Odds Series)

This is a live performance at Fyfe’s, recorded and mixed to digital stereo. Fyfe’s was a vibrant community tavern with a live music stage that featured many renowned local jazz musicians, one or two of whom occasionally sat in with the band. On this occasion, local master jazz bassist Hans Sturm stepped up to play one piece with us.

This set has a few unusual moments, across a wide range of moods and musical styles. There is some groove-based hard bop jazz, and some almost-avant-garde ambient-experimental playing. There are a few instrumental appearances that step over the free jazz line into pure experiment, as on "SaxMbira."

It was a fun set for us to play, although a little unusual. Yet in many ways this kind of musical adventure was the stock in trade of Dangerous Odds, a band after all where 99.5% of the music was improvised, played without a safety net.
