Extended Voices

New Forms in Experimental Music (series)
Vol 2: Extended Voices

Experiments in voice and playing instruments while walking and dervishing in a resonant acoustic space. Structured long-form improvisation.

Throughout the 1980s my music partner Stuart Hinds and I created long-form radiobroadcast pieces for WCBN-FM in Ann Arbor, text/sound poetry, tape music in the UM Electronic Music Studio, live concerts, composed and improvised music for voices and instruments, and Javanese gamelan, and much more.

This group of improvised and structured-improvisation pieces were created during a visit that I made to work with Stuart in Lubbock in 1985 before departing for Indonesia for my Fulbright year studying Javanese gamelan as a composer. We had access to Moody Auditorium, with its glass and stone entrance lobby that has a cathedral-like acoustic reverb. We did several sessions to multitrack reel tape as well as to portable Marantz cassette recorder. Microphone placements included widely separated stereo mics while we walked through the space, and an AT single-point stereo ambient mic for some of the semi-composed structured-improv recordings.

We also wrote and performed a live concert during my two weeks visiting in Lubbock, featuring both live and tape music.

Other pieces from these Moody Auditorium sessions can be found as the “Worlds” series of pieces on “a stone flute” (NFIEM Vol. 1), also on my Bandcamp site.

There are more recordings from these sessions that I will continue to release over time.
