salju musim semi (Spring Snow) (Shelter In Place no. 5)

for Chapman Stick & suling degung

From 1985 to 1986 I was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant to study gamelan music as a composer in Java, Indonesia. I was based in Surakarta, Central Java, but traveled all over the island to study, photograph, and record. I spent a significant amount of time in Banyumas, and also in Bandung, Sunda (West Java). Suling degung is a bamboo flute from Sunda, here played in an original improvisation layered with Chapman Stick. This piece began with memories of my time spent in Java evoked by playing suling, then developed into a layered improvisation built on time cycles of varying length, influenced by how gamelan structural cycles interplay. The music was recorded at the time a mid-April snowstorm covered the greening earth with fresh snow. The snow fell all day, while I recorded and mixed the music. Thus, the title seemed natural: spring snow in Indonesian.
