Rumours of Green (Shelter In Place no. 7)

for synths (BeatWave, Animoog, Grain Science, Alchemy)

I had to take a necessary roadtrip for recording studio and personal purposes, so writing track no. 7 was a little delayed. After returning home, tired from a productive voyage, I sat down in studio to explore what to do next for the Shelter In Place album.

Out the window, the world had changed overnight from late-winter browns to vibrant, verdant greens. Sunlight danced in the trees for the first time in what felt like forever.

Despite everything going on in the world, it is okay to take a moment to remember spring, to remember life and love. it's okay to feel okay.

And that's where "Rumours of Green" began.

The piece is made from an improvised BeatWave sequencer session morphed in real time—inspired by my work with cyclic rhythms, Javanese gamelan, and ostinatos in minimalism—to which were added an Animoog bass punch, and a couple of layers of modulated lead floating over the top of it all.

We begin and end with the heartbeat pulse, which rises and falls in waves like the season. Despite everything, we live. We go on.
