Azumaya (Shelter In Place 16)

a place for contemplation

inspired by nature and Japanese Zen gardens used for meditation and contemplation

for two shakuhachi

This 16th track, Azumaya, concludes my Shelter In Place album. It is a fitting way to complete this project, with a flute meditation inspired by Zen gardens. The music video will also reflect that setting.

This been a sometimes turbulent journey, that ends in serenity.

I began Shelter In Place during the first phase of pandemic lockdown in March 2020. It was to give myself something to do, and grew into an album others told me they were enjoying because of the serenity it brought them amidst the chaos. Most of the tracks were made following my self-imposed process of making one new track per week, for the duration of the quarantine lockdown. It has been fruitful, and for me therapeutic. I have also written at least two or three new songs during this period, with notated music to share with others.

As of the end of July 2020, I bring this collection of disparate new music to a close, so that I turn my focus towards other music: the creation of a new album featuring bamboo and wooden flutes, and a new Chapman Stick album.

Azumaya began as two solo recordings of shakuhachi which I discovered made a good duo when placed side by side. The process of joining two shakuhachi solos was effortless, implying they had been meant to go together all along. There is almost a dialogue at times, like two deer calling to each other across a valley, or two spirits communing during meditation.

This is one of a handful of extra tracks I made and held in reserve during the making of Shelter In Place, in case I had a dry week but still wanted to release a track. I chose to release Azumaya in part because I spent time in a Japanese garden seeking my own solace and serenity, and made enough new video and photo elements to make a new music video; the connection seemed obvious, so here is this track.
