In the Ocean of Stars

This ambient soundscape album began as a relaxing meditation sound mixing process, immediately after finishing another recording project (my analog modular synth album "Interstellar Radio Clouds"). I plugged my iPad directly into a Zoom H4n recorder, and made sound elements and layers, to be mixed later. I worked sitting at leisure, on the couch, in my bedóanywhere but in the recording studio. Tracks were assembled from elements made on a wide-ranging group of software synthesizers, tone generators, generative-algorithm ambient sound generators, video-driven sound synthesizers, and the collection of Moog apps for iPad. Making this music happened by surprise, and quickly.

The mixing and mastering process was, by contrast, slow, requiring a lot of attention to detail. Ambient soundscapes are very easily thrown into chaos by very small changes in the mix. Balance is essential.

I wrote a scenario, or narrative programme, mixing and mastering, to help me find the thread in the music. During the final preparation of the album, looking for transitions and segues between tracks, writing a scenario helped me to have a cinematic overview of the musical material, and organize it into a proper sequence. The scenario is entirely optional to the listening experience.

It surprised me that it took longer to finish this album than I expected, but I learned a great deal in the process. I hope you find the journey as rewarding as I did.
